The Complete Guide to Visit Giza Pyramids

Updated: Dec 3

Hey barefoot walkers!

One of the main attractions, if not the main one, in Egypt is its pyramids, which are around 4,500 years old. The entire construction process remains a great mystery. How was it possible to move such heavy stones? How were they cut to fit together perfectly? Why did they build the pyramids? These are some of the questions I leave you with and I think it's becoming increasingly difficult to answer them with certainty.

Here, I share my experience of visiting the Giza Pyramids. I recommend using this article as a visit guide with some advice and tips.

The best way to get to the Giza Pyramids is to take the GoBus to Cairo (if you’re already in Cairo, even better) and then use the InDrive app to reach the pyramids. You can take a taxi but it's more expensive. We paid 180 EGP (approximately €3.60) using InDrive, while a taxi costs around 350 EGP (approximately €7).

There are many hotels around the pyramids, I don't doubt their quality but they are expensive. Here’s the Airbnb link we used: we had a terrace with a view of the pyramids, breakfast included, walking to the pyramids took only 2 minutes and we paid just €19 per night. If you want a more budget-friendly stay, I recommend it.

Until 10 a.m., there are a lot of people buying tickets to enter, mostly school groups visiting the pyramids. So, don’t go before 10 a.m. or you’ll just waste time.

Next to the entrance, there’s a ticket office and people offering guided tours. We went without a guide and paid 700 EGP (approximately €14), if you want to go inside the pyramids, you have to pay extra. Check the photo with the price list.

You’ll often be asked if you want to ride a camel or horse (which costs extra, of course). But please, DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. The animals are visibly mistreated and by using this “service,” you’re supporting their exploitation. Honestly, you can do the visit perfectly well walking.

As advice, bring a hat (there’s almost no shade), bring water and go to the toilet before entering (there are paid toilets inside).

I know there’s a show at the end of the day. The pyramids are illuminated in different colors, with a presentation about the mysteries, history, curiosities of the pyramids and the ancient Egyptian people. I don’t know how much it costs but I was able to see it from the terrace of our Airbnb.

I hope you enjoy it, I ask that you respect the restricted areas. We’re talking about 4,500-year-old structures, shrouded in mystery that we must respect (I mention this because I saw people climbing the stones for photos).
